The Real Challenges of Training a Working Line Dog (And Why "Just More Exercise" Isn't the Answer)

If you've brought home a working line dog; a Kelpie, Koolie, Border Collie, Malinois, working-line German Shepherd, or a high drive Labrador, you've probably already discovered something the breeder didn't mention: these dogs are a different training project entirely from the family pet down the street.

Working line dogs are bred from generations of dogs selected for one thing above all else, performance. Herding, protection, detection, guarding, retrieving under pressure. Temperament, drive, and problem-solving ability are prioritised over calmness or ease of living. That's exactly what makes them so capable and exactly what makes them so much harder to train well.

Here are the real challenges owners and trainers run into, and why the usual advice often falls short.

1. Drive Doesn't Turn Off, It Redirects

The biggest misunderstanding with working line dogs is thinking exercise alone solves the problem. A tired working dog isn't necessarily a satisfied one. These dogs were bred to work through a task; not just burn energy there's a difference between a dog that's physically tired and a dog that's mentally fulfilled.

When that drive isn't given a legitimate outlet, it doesn't disappear. It shows up somewhere else: herding the kids, fixating on shadows or light, chewing through anything left unattended, or obsessively patrolling the fence line. Owners often respond by adding more physical exercise, which can make the problem works. A fitter dog with unmet mental drive just has more stamina to act it out.

A generic obedience class, run at a pace built for the average family pet, often under stimulates a working line dog to the point of disengagement or frustration. These dogs need training that's precise, well timed, and genuinely challenging not repetitive drills that bore a dog capable of far more.

3. Reactivity Is Often Mistaken for "Bad Behaviour"

Many working line breeds were selected for heightened environmental awareness. Noticing movement, sound, and changes in their surroundings faster than most dogs. In a working context (herding livestock, detection work, protection work) that awareness is the whole point.

In a suburban home, the same trait often looks like leash reactivity, barking at passersby, or fixating on other dogs. Owners are frequently told this is a training failure or a sign of aggression, when in many cases it's an unmanaged version of exactly the trait the dog was bred for. The fix isn't suppression, it's teaching the dog how to process and respond to that awareness calmly.

4. Urban and Suburban Life Wasn't Designed for These Dogs

Working line dogs were never bred with apartment living, daycare, or a 30-minute leash walk in mind. Their environment has changed far faster than their genetics have. This is why cookie cutter obedience programs so often fall short with working breeds. The dog doesn't need to learn "sit" better. It needs a structured outlet scent work, impulse control games, engagement exercises, a genuine "job" that satisfies the instinct the breed carries, adapted to a life that doesn't include actual livestock, detection targets, or a handler in the field.

5. Owners Are Often Training the Dog They Expected, Not the Dog They Have

A lot of working line dogs end up in pet homes because people fall for the breed's intelligence, loyalty, or looks without fully understanding what raising that drive requires day to day. When training doesn't go as expected, it's easy to assume something is wrong with the dog, when often the real gap is a mismatch between the dog's needs and the owner's daily structure.

This isn't a knock on the owner; most people aren't told what they're taking on. But it does mean training a working line dog well usually starts with resetting expectations, not just teaching commands.

Training a working line dog successfully comes down to working with the drive instead of against it:

Biting is one of the most common concerns new puppy owners bring to us, and it's almost always completely normal behaviour rather than a sign of aggression. Understanding why it happens makes it much easier to work through.

Why Do Puppies Bite?

Puppies explore the world with their mouths the way toddlers explore with their hands. On top of that natural curiosity, teething, roughly between 3 and 6 months old, makes sore gums crave the relief of chewing. And a lot of what looks like "biting" is leftover play behaviour. This is exactly how puppies played with their littermates, and it takes time and consistent guidance for them to learn that human skin isn't a chew toy.

3 Top Tips to Stop Puppy Biting

1. Redirect to an appropriate item, immediately and consistently The moment teeth touch skin, calmly remove your hand and offer a toy or chew instead. Timing matters more than the correction itself, the redirection needs to happen the instant biting starts, every single time, for your puppy to make the connection.

2. Use bite inhibition, not just bite stopping Rather than only suppressing biting, teach your puppy how hard is too hard first (a sharp "ow" and a brief pause in play when it hurts), before working toward no mouthing at all. This mirrors how littermates naturally teach each other bite pressure, and skipping straight to "no biting ever" can leave a dog with poor bite inhibition later in life if it's ever startled or in pain as an adult.

3. Manage triggers and meet the need behind the behaviour A lot of biting spikes are really overtiredness, overstimulation, or under-met chewing needs, not defiance. Proactively offering appropriate chew outlets, making sure your puppy gets enough rest, and calmly ending play before things get too excited prevents a lot of biting before it starts, rather than just reacting to it afterward.

Most training problems aren't a "bad dog" problem, they’re a timing, consistency, or expectation problem. After years of working with dogs across obedience, behaviour modification, and detection work, the same three mistakes show up again and again, regardless of breed or age. The good news: all three are fixable once you know what to look for.

1. Rewarding (or Correcting) at the Wrong Moment

Timing is everything in dog training, and it's the single biggest gap between what owners think they're teaching and what their dog actually learns. Dogs don't connect a reward or correction to an entire sequence of behaviour, they connect it to whatever they were doing in that exact second.

Praise a dog for sitting after it's already stood back up, and you've just reinforced standing up. Correct a dog for coming back to you late, and you've just taught it that coming back at all leads to something unpleasant, so next time, it's slower to return.

The fix: the reward or correction needs to land within a second or two of the behaviour itself. If your timing is off, a marker word ("yes!") or clicker used consistently can bridge that gap far more reliably than praise alone.

2. Being Inconsistent Across People, Places, and Situations

A dog that "knows" a command at home but ignores it at the park hasn't actually learned the command, it's learned a very specific, narrow version of it. This is one of the most common frustrations owners bring to us: "he's perfect inside but won't listen outside," or "she listens to me but not my partner."

Dogs generalise far less than people expect. A behaviour trained in a quiet lounge room, with one person, using one cue, in a low-distraction environment is not the same skill as that behaviour performed on a busy street with the whole family giving different cues in different tones.

The fix: once a behaviour is solid in one setting, it has to be deliberately practiced across new locations, people, and distraction levels, this is called proofing, and skipping it is the single most common reason training doesn't transfer to real life.

3. Managing the Behaviour Instead of Meeting the Need Behind It

This is the mistake we see most often with high-drive and working breeds specifically, but it applies across the board. Owners try to train away a symptom; barking, chewing, pulling, reactivity, without addressing what's actually driving it. Boredom, under-stimulation, anxiety, or an unmet instinct will keep resurfacing in some form until the underlying need is met, no matter how well the symptom itself is suppressed.

A dog that chews the couch because it's under-stimulated will often find a new outlet once the chewing is "corrected" because the correction never touched the actual problem. The same goes for reactivity rooted in anxiety, or hyperactivity rooted in unmet drive.

The fix: ask what the behaviour is achieving for the dog before deciding how to train it. Suppressing a behaviour without giving the dog an appropriate outlet or addressing the root cause tends to produce short-term compliance and long-term frustration for both of you.
